Curiosity, adaptability and a strong foundation in secure coding are key to thriving in the fast-evolving field of software security, says Brightspot's Mohammed Amiwala. In this interview with Rose, Mohammed shares insights into his career path and daily responsibilities as a security software engineer.

When did you join Brightspot? What brought you here?
I joined Brightspot in the summer of 2023. I have experience working with CMS platforms, so when I saw the opportunity to work on a CMS with a strong reputation like Brightspot, it felt like the perfect fit. My background in software engineering combined with my personal interest in security aligned well with the role. I've always wanted to work in environments where I can make a real impact on code security and collaborate with different departments.

Can you tell me about your role as a security software engineer at Brightspot? What is a typical day like?
As a security software engineer, my days revolve around safeguarding Brightspot's platform. A typical day involves running static application security tests (SAST) using tools like Snyk and reviewing flagged vulnerabilities. I work closely with our engineering directors to address potential vulnerabilities. I also handle JIRA tickets, review incidents and discuss ways to improve secure coding practices and incident response protocols.

What inspired you to pursue a career in software security?
I’ve always been drawn to the idea of outsmarting potential attackers and building resilient systems. Software security is a fast-paced field where you constantly have to learn new things, and there’s never a dull moment. Also, the impact of your work is very tangible — you can see the effects right there in production. You’re literally protecting data and systems from being compromised, which is a huge responsibility.

What are some of the more interesting projects you’ve worked on during your time at Brightspot? How did this work help you grow professionally?
There have been multiple projects. I would say the most interesting are what I'm working on right now with Snyk, addressing vulnerabilities across all our codebases. For example, we encountered a vulnerability that required us to dive deep into our back-end infrastructure, collaborate across teams and come up with a solution that not only patched the problem but also improved our overall security posture. Another project was enabling autoresponder notifications for vulnerabilities on employee laptops. This helped automate key processes and made employees more aware of any outdated or vulnerable software on their devices. Both projects taught me a lot about balancing security needs with business goals.

What’s the best piece of career or life advice you’ve ever received?
One that applies to security is to focus on the solution, not the problem. It’s easy to get bogged down by everything that could go wrong, especially during a security incident. The key is to stay solution-oriented, focused and calm no matter how big the challenge may be.

Do you have any advice for college students or those starting their careers as security software engineers?
I just graduated from college in 2023, so this is fresh for me. My advice would be to get comfortable with the basics first — things like secure coding practices and network encryption. It’s tempting to jump straight into tools, technologies and certifications, but a strong foundation will make you more adaptable as the security field evolves. Security threats evolve, and so should we. Don’t be afraid to stay curious and keep learning.

Besides the people, what’s your favorite part about working at Brightspot?
Honestly, the autonomy. I love that I’m trusted to take on big projects and make real decisions that impact company security. There’s also a great balance between pushing boundaries and maintaining a high standard of security across the board.

What are your favorite activities or hobbies outside of work?
Outside of work, I’m into exploring new tech, particularly around crypto and Web3. I’ve worked on a cryptocurrency launcher before, so that’s always on my mind. I also recently got into fitness, working on some aesthetic bodybuilding goals. When I’m winding down, I enjoy watching YouTube or Netflix to clear my mind.

What do you love about living in the Chicago area?
Chicago has everything — the food, the architecture, the energy, the people. I love how diverse Chicago and Skokie are. You can find a great mix of cultures and people in one place. Plus, I’m a huge fan of the sports teams here. It’s a good balance between the hustle and bustle of city life and the moments when you can just chill by the lake.

What is your favorite movie of all time?
That’s a tough one, but if I had to pick, I’d say The Dark Knight by Christopher Nolan. It was the first movie that made me think, "Wow, this is next level." It’s fast-paced and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The intensity and cinematography are next level, too.
